Committee rejects plan to realign standing committees with executive departments

Apr 3, 2025

A bill to realign House standing committees with executive branch departments and to rebalance bill workloads failed in committee after members raised concerns about changing House structure without matching Senate action.

The full story

Representative Jack Lademan (District 32) presented a bill to realign House standing committees so each committee is matched more closely with an executive department. Lademan said the plan would assign the state's 14 executive departments across 10 standing committees to improve efficiency and balance the number of bills each committee handles. He cited Bureau of Legislative Research (BLR) data showing large variance in bill loads: in 2023 committee bill counts ranged from 28 (Aging, Children and Youth) to 169 (Judiciary); for 2025 to date the lowest was 15 and public health had 171.
