Board adds Electricity & Magnetism and Forensic Science courses to Beloit Learning Academy pathways

The Beloit School District board on Jan. 14 approved new course proposals for the Beloit Learning Academy, adding Electricity & Magnetism (Part 1) and Forensic Science (Part 2) to the academy’s science pathway.
At a Teaching, Learning, Equity & Pupil Services Committee meeting earlier the same evening, district staff presented the curriculum changes and said both new courses are extensions of existing offerings. The Electricity & Magnetism course was described as aligning Beloit Learning Academy (BLA) instruction with Beloit Memorial High School physical science, and Forensic Science Part 2 was presented as a deeper, applied follow-up to an existing Part 1 course that typically enrolls 20–25 students per term.
Staff said the proposals require no additional full‑time staffing (no FTE change) and are intended to expand BLA’s science and career-education pathways. Committee members asked about potential partnerships with Blackhawk Technical College and University of Wisconsin–Platteville; presenters said those alignments are opportunities the district will pursue as the courses are fully developed.
The committee recommended the items to the full board. Later in the evening the board approved the additions on the consent agenda; the district plans to offer the courses beginning in spring 2025. The item sponsors noted the electricity course connects to local power production and distribution careers and that forensic science supports pathways in public safety and allied fields.
Betsy Schroeder, principal at Beloit Learning Academy, and district CTE and science staff joined the committee presentation to describe field-trip and hands-on components planned for the courses. The board recorded the motion to add the classes and carried it as part of the consent agenda.
