Mobile County board recognizes Blount High students for drones, robotics

At its Aug. 19 meeting, the Mobile County Public Schools board honored Blount High School JROTC and Blount Tech students for achievements in drone and robotics competitions and demonstrated their robot.
On Aug. 19, 2024, the Mobile County Public Schools Board of Education recognized students from Blount High School’s JROTC and Blount Tech Club for regional and national achievements in drone operations and robotics.
The board applauded the students after the group, led by JROTC and school staff, described year-round club activities including three drone workshops, LOTC drone competitions for middle schools, and participation in national aerial drone and VEX robotics contests. “We’re very thankful for all the things that you give us just to give us an opportunity to lead and show other schools how to do it since we lead the way,” a Blount Tech student said during the recognition.
Board members noted the program’s emphasis on programming, advanced drone operations and computer science. One board member, referencing the district’s technology programs, said the students’ work “goes a long ways” in preparing them for technology careers and commended staff who supervise the club.
After the recognition, students demonstrated an indoor drone and the club’s “robot cat” for board members and attendees.
The board’s remarks and the student demonstration took place during the Reports and Recognitions portion of the Aug. 19 meeting.
