IT staff reports cloud migration and security improvements in quarterly update

Washington County IT staff reported conversion of Microsoft Access databases to a county app, Office 365 migrations, network switch upgrades at the sheriff’s office, and a rise in security audit score following new hires and software purchases.
County IT staff provided a quarterly update describing work completed and projects under way across departments.
Joel, presenting the update, said several Microsoft Access databases used by planning and parks/natural resources were converted to a Washington County application. Staff are also moving departments to Office 365 and beginning a multi-year shift of file storage to cloud services. Joel said the county completed network switch upgrades at the sheriff’s office and plans to replace switches at the public agency center this summer.
Joel reported Washington County’s security-audit score improved from 633 to 749 after the county hired a security position and purchased software to better manage updates. He described ongoing work to bring the Town of Erin onto the county’s shared IT services and to continue migrations for other villages and townships.
Committee members asked about next-generation permitting in the land resources system; Joel said about 80% of listed permits are available online, with two permits still pending adjustments (one is the county highway access/utility permit being coordinated with highway staff, and another is pending planning/parks tweaks). Joel said staff will continue the multi-year Office 365 migration and monitor shared-service customers.
No committee action was taken on the IT report; it was provided for information and committee members asked clarifying questions about permitting and the security audit.
