MCCSC outlines professional learning plan, highlights fall implementation of comprehensive program

Superintendent Dr. Winston introduced a presentation on professional learning on March 25, describing it as the seventh of eight strategic plan presentations tied to MCCSC’s 2021–2025 strategic plan. District staff outlined goals to cultivate professional learning and to secure structures for meaningful, relevant development for administrators, teachers and support staff.
Miss Harmon, the staff presenter, described the district’s approach: a mix of corporationwide keynote sessions, building-level planning time, departmental professional learning communities, and teacher-led breakout sessions. She highlighted a large fall staff professional learning day (November 5) that the district runs as an in‑house mini‑conference where teachers and administrators present sessions for colleagues; staff reported over 90 breakout sessions during the most recent district day, with high participant ratings.
Harmon said more than 90% of certified staff rated the district professional learning event effective in content, discussion and format. She noted targeted sessions on language and learning comprehension for elementary staff, equity-focused work for secondary leaders, and multiple breakout topics such as acceleration strategies for students, expanded reading curriculum resources (UFLY), wellness for school leaders, and career-pathway tools like Indiana Career Explorer.
Looking ahead, Harmon said the district completed research and a needs assessment and will use those results to develop a comprehensive professional learning plan. The board was told that implementation of the comprehensive plan will begin this fall and that staff will continue evaluating and refining the plan through continuous improvement.
Board members responded with thanks and praise for teacher-led sessions and the emphasis on giving teachers a leadership role in professional learning.

The board scheduled the next strategic presentation on staff diversity and noted May 6 as another scheduled middle- and high-school professional learning day that will cover new math curriculum training, teacher evaluation work and school improvement planning.
