Pharmacy update: DEA approval pending, initial inventory staged; staff recommends gap malpractice coverage

Clinic staff told the Dahl Memorial Clinic Planning Committee on Jan. 21 that the clinic’s DEA approval for the pharmacy is in the final stages at headquarters and the clinic expects the DEA notice soon. Once the DEA number is issued staff will apply for an NPI and begin limited prescription fills for clinic patients.
Staff said computers and initial inventory are in place and that telepharmacy training has been scheduled. They said the initial rollout will focus on patients already known to the clinic while staff verifies dispensing workflows and prescription transfers from outside providers.
Staff also described "gap" malpractice insurance (separate from directors-and-officers insurance): although the clinic is covered by FTCA for most malpractice exposure, there are limited exceptions — for example, FTCA coverage may not extend to dentists who do not meet certain hourly thresholds — and staff recommended obtaining gap coverage to fill those narrow exceptions. Staff said they are soliciting quotes and will present them to the board.
