Planning staff reports land‑use work program, code audit and MPO staffing changes

Planning staff briefed the commission on recent approvals, an upcoming land development code audit, and a new Metropolitan Planning Organization director starting mid‑September.
At the end of the Sept. 3 meeting, planning staff provided routine department updates. The staff report noted recent approvals for projects including a Bell Bank, a Domino's paving permit, and a Minn‑Kota Power laydown yard. The signed subcommittee continues discussions about billboard changes.
Staff also reported that a land development code audit — intended to examine compatibility with "missing middle" housing forms such as duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes — is being prepared by consultants and is expected to be drafted in late September or October, with a final product to the commission in November–December time frame.
Finally, staff announced Ben Arath will start as the new Metropolitan Planning Organization director on Sept. 15; staff said he is from the community and has most recently worked in Bismarck.
