The full story
During the general public comment period, a Sequim resident sharply criticized Clallam County’s code-enforcement program, alleging a pattern of inconsistent enforcement, staff turnover and poor recordkeeping. The commenter said county code enforcement has high turnover under the department director, that backlog explanations citing staffing and training are insufficient, and that recorded metrics in quarterly reports (caseload and days-to-close) reflect worsening performance. She said the director had promised quarterly program reporting per a multidepartment memorandum of understanding but that required items were missing or late. The resident also alleged the department failed to file liens or collect fines in a timely way, that cases were closed despite ongoing violations and that two employees were exonerated after being held in contempt of judicial orders. She submitted photographs of four adjacent properties and invited a commissioner to visit the site to observe what she described as unresolved violations. What the board said: The board acknowledged public comment and continued the meeting; the transcript shows no immediate substantive response from the board on the allegations beyond the invitation to inspect by commissioners who had previously visited the area. Why it matters: Code enforcement affects public health, neighborhood blight, property values and legal processes for resolving code violations. The resident asked the board to seek accountability on reporting, fine collection and follow-up so that residents receive timely enforcement and consistent data in quarterly reports. What the resident requested: The commenter asked commissioners to inspect adjacent properties on Sherborne Road and to address perceived inconsistencies in case status, timeliness of enforcement and collections.
