District reports progress on turf, track and roofing projects; Ridgeview field nearly complete
Summary
Facilities staff updated the board on athletic projects including new artificial turf and track resurfacing at both high schools, G-max impact testing, Obsidian bleachers and several maintenance projects; Ridgeview field and track are near completion and Redmond High work is slated to finish before the first games.
Facilities staff gave a progress report on ongoing construction and maintenance projects across the Redmond School District, with emphasis on athletics upgrades and improvements to multiple campuses.
Key updates provided by the facilities presenter included: - Track surfacing and artificial turf installation at the district's high schools and middle schools. Obsidian's track is complete and the middle-school track most visible from the roadway looks "really nice." Ridgeview's turf field is finished and its track is being prepared; Ridgeview's project is running ahead of Redmond High School's. - Redmond High School had turf being laid at the time of the report; both high-school projects are planned to be completed before their first games: Ridgeview by Aug. 29 and Redmond High School about two weeks later (exact dates stated as target windows by staff). - A professional test of the field surface's G-max rating was performed and met impact standards for concussion testing; the presenter said the underlayer material provides substantial impact protection even before infill is added. - Obsidian Middle School received new gym bleachers and playground/parking-lot work at Tom McCall (playground replacement) uncovered deteriorated pipe bedding and required rerouting and additional subgrade work; the contractor handled the additional scope while keeping close to the original schedule. - Vern Patrick School roof replacement (first re-roof since 1995) is roughly 95% complete; new gutters were installed and staff found an historic bell on the roof dated 1907 that appears to have been relocated several times.
Facilities staff also reported plans for future projects (cooling upgrades at Ridgeview, Sage and Terrebonne, Obsidian bathroom remodel and other smaller upgrades) and said the Bond Oversight Committee will meet next Monday to review progress.
The board asked practical questions about accessibility (whether the cushioned track surface would present any problems for people on crutches) and were assured the soft layer is slight and should not create ADA issues.
No board action was required; the briefing was informational, and staff will continue to report status updates to the board and Bond Oversight Committee.
