Treasurer will renovate existing office for document storage; lease plan set aside
Summary
The Infrastructure Committee learned the treasurer will repurpose and renovate existing county office space for record storage rather than pursue a roughly $18,000 lease; final required square footage and shortfall remain unspecified pending a full move and inventory.

The Infrastructure Committee removed the treasurer's record-storage item from the agenda after staff reported the treasurer will renovate existing county office space to accommodate records rather than lease external space. The report said planned renovations will be paid from the treasurer's budget and that previously discussed lease costs of about $18,000 are no longer being pursued.
Why it matters: record storage affects access to public records and county operating costs; choosing in-house renovation can reduce recurring lease costs but may require reconfiguration and short-term moves.
Janice, identified in the meeting as the treasurer's representative, told the committee, "We're just going to use where we have storage space now, build some walls, knock some walls down, and this makes sense where we can keep what we need in office." She said the department had anticipated asking for about $18,000 for a lease but that "there's been more actions" and that the lease request was no longer necessary.
Asked whether the renovated space would provide the full square footage needed, Janice said it would not be certain "until we get all the stuff moved and put over in the other storage part," adding "I'm not sure" when pressed on how much space is short. Committee members noted other available spaces on the tenth floor (the old jail area) and a set of rooms totaling about 750 square feet that do not flood and could be used if required. One committee member noted that certain offices have never flooded and suggested those locations as alternatives if additional capacity is needed.
No formal contract or lease was approved. The treasurer's office will proceed with internal renovations and present any additional budget requests once inventory and moves are complete.
