Board to explore cell‑phone pouch program after members cite classroom distraction concerns

Board members discussed whether to adopt a cell‑phone pouch system for students after members and parents reported teachers spending class time enforcing phone rules and parents receiving texts during the day.

Board member Libby Grama introduced sample policies and a model from Wapakoneta High School and asked administration to investigate solutions that would reduce classroom distraction without overburdening teachers. Discussion covered several practical concerns: cost (pouches reported in other districts have been expensive), durability and student workarounds, and logistics for identifying and ensuring devices are placed in pouches. One board member suggested lower‑cost envelope systems had been used elsewhere.

No formal motion to adopt a program was made. Instead the board directed administration to gather comparative information, reach out to nearby districts, and present cost estimates and implementation options. Board members asked that the Parent Advisory Committee review pros, cons and likely costs and report back. The superintendent and staff said they would consult districts with experience and search for grant or low‑cost procurement options.
