Morris County officials on Wednesday reported progress on several public‑works projects, including rockfall mitigation on Sussex Turnpike in Randolph Township, continued work at the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy, and upcoming snagging work on the Whippany‑Passaic flood‑remediation effort.
Deputy Director Steve Shaw told the board that site grading has begun on the rockfall mitigation project along Sussex Turnpike and that grading activity has started on a multipurpose building (formerly described as the warehouse building) at the Morris County Public Safety Training Academy. He said he received notice from Mayor Ace Gallagher that snagging work for the Whippany‑Passaic Flood Remediation Task Force will begin at BC Richardson’s property, identified as Site Number 5, on Monday, Jan. 13, with additional sites to follow.
Shaw said the snagging work is part of a federal‑funded effort led by an ad hoc group of towns and called the snagging work "low‑hanging fruit" that should help with local flooding. He also noted that winter conditions — frozen ground — make this a suitable time to operate heavy equipment and that permits are required before work can proceed in other locations.
The deputy director did not detail contract awards, budgets, or the total federal funding amounts at the meeting; he described the snagging effort as an initial phase and said other sites would follow after Site No. 5.
Shaw framed the projects as incremental steps to reduce flood risk and stabilize road corridors while construction continues at the training academy.
The board did not take formal votes on these specific projects during the work session; staff said they will provide additional details and permitting status in upcoming meetings.
