District reports progress on summer capital projects; most work ready for Aug. 11 except LHS cafeteria elements

District staff told the board July 28 that most summer capital projects outside the Libertyville High School servery and courtyard are on track for the start of school. Facilities staff and a school principal reviewed progress on bathrooms, classroom HVAC units, pool maintenance and other site work.
Why it matters: Timely completion of summer capital work affects classrooms, student services and extracurricular schedules at the start of the school year.
Facilities manager Mark Coopman and staff reported stacked bathrooms by Classroom 132/232 would be ready for Aug. 11, with tile, fixtures and ceiling grids in place. Coopman said the district is repeating a tile and stall approach used successfully in an earlier restroom renovation.
Work on classroom HVAC ‘univents’ in rooms 253–261 is largely complete: new units are installed and operable, pending a few vent and finishing touches. Bookcases that will conceal ductwork were measured and scheduled for delivery the week of Aug. 4; staff said HVAC operation will not depend on those final elements.
The district also gave a status update on its pool maintenance: staff said the pool was fully drained for inspection and tile repair, and that it had been refilled and was undergoing heating and chemical balancing. Mark Schaefer noted the district completed required inspections in line with the Virginia Graeme Baker Act for pool grates.
Other districtwide items: staff said the island at Vernon Hills that supports parent drop-off was completed after July 4 to avoid interference with community events, and that information technology disposal continued through a vendor with a zero-landfill approach, Digital Red.
Board members and staff praised the work of principals and facilities staff on logistics. Several board members thanked LHS Principal Ray Albin and the facilities team for working on tight timelines. The July 28 meeting will be followed by continued updates at the August facilities committee meeting.
