Workshop instructor (Instructor) said a key to successful small hydroponic systems is to make chemical changes slowly and in small steps. “The key is to go slowly a little bit at a time,” the instructor said, describing how to adjust pH and fertilizer concentrations when first setting up a system and whenever tap water is added.
The instructor explained why reservoir and tray management matter: ‘‘In the reservoir, you want to keep it anywhere between a half and 2 thirds full,’’ they said, to keep the pump covered while leaving space in case the water drains or the power goes out. They said the grow trays fill to the level of the side fittings by gravity and that the system should reach equilibrium once the pump circulates water up and it feeds back down through the rafts.
The instructor advised checking and adjusting pump flow if the system gurgles, including using a small valve on some pumps or hose fittings: closing a valve “just a hair” can stop cavitation and stabilize flow. They warned that running a pump dry can cause cavitation and ruin the pump, leaving only a small amount of water in the reservoir to dump out.
On cleaning and sanitizing, the instructor described several practical methods: disassemble and pump or pour water out (a “bucket brigade” or by removing a swivel hose fitting), hose and brush components outside where possible, and use plain white vinegar to remove calcification from hard-water deposits. For general cleaning they recommended dish soap and a soft-bristled brush; for sanitizing they recommended a diluted bleach solution (described in the session as about 1 in 20) and then thorough rinsing so chlorine is not left in the system. The instructor also suggested hydrogen peroxide as an option for wiping raft surfaces but cautioned against letting sanitizers touch live plants.
Other practical tips included soaking hoses and rafts in a diluted bleach solution, flipping rafts to clean holes, rinsing thoroughly before reassembly, and reattaching swivel fittings before refilling. The instructor noted rafts will sink slightly as plants grow, which can change flow and may require valve adjustment. They also recommended adjusting fertilizer pH after adding tap water because unadjusted tap water will change the nutrient solution’s pH.
The instructor said full system breakdown and cleaning may be needed on a schedule—“a couple months or 6 months”—or sooner if something goes wrong. The session focused on hands-on maintenance best practices and safety precautions for small home or community hydroponic systems; no formal decisions, motions, or regulatory actions were discussed or taken during the talk.
