At a July 21 Licensing Board session held in conjunction with the council meeting, the board approved four routine licensing items but the fire chief reported outstanding fire‑code deficiencies at the site of the new restaurant Beak’s Joint.
The board approved a new Class B combo reserve liquor license for Beak’s Joint (the former Hero of the Dog location in Barton), an amusement device license (No. 2526), the annual renewal of a massage‑establishment license for BJ and Company (No. 2526), and a change of agent for GPM Southeast R Stores. Motions to approve each item carried with no recorded opposition.
During the consent discussion a council member asked whether prior inspection issues at Beak’s Joint had been resolved. The fire chief said the establishment “did have some fire code violations” that, to his knowledge, “have not been successfully corrected yet” and that those corrections will have to take place before the business can open. The chief specified the deficiencies related primarily to the vent hood and several kitchen items tied to cooking equipment and said inspectors are working closely with the building owner and business owner.
Licensing board members approved the items with the understanding that operational openings remain contingent on satisfying building and fire inspections required by city code.
