Board reviews conceptual Wausau–Merrill trail master plan; no construction commitment

Marathon County supervisors discussed adoption of the Wausau-to-Merrill corridor master plan (Resolution 405-25) at the July 17 meeting; the plan is conceptual, includes cost estimates for a roughly 15.5-mile trail and does not obligate the county to funding or construction. The county parks director, Jamie, told the board the plan identifies a potential corridor and includes rough cost estimates and alternate routing where topography or water crossings increase expense. The master plan noted property owners who may be unsupportive of a trail and identified segments that would require rerouting. The plan’s purpose, Jamie said, is to provide a guideline for future acquisition or construction when land becomes available or partner entities choose to develop segments. Why it matters: local governments and municipalities along the Wisconsin River may be asked to contribute funding for construction of trail segments in future phases; supervisors asked for cost clarity and noted the plan states no current fiscal obligation to the county and that any land acquisition or construction would require board approval and funding identification. Supervisor Wilhelm and Supervisor Gisselman requested that the plan be included in future packets and noted concern about eventual fiscal impacts; Supervisor Ritter said approval mainly allows outside partners to use county support to pursue other funding and does not commit county funds at this time.
