Planning staff flags 2025 General Assembly styrofoam ban for local code review

Planning staff told the commission that the office received a packet summarizing legislative changes from the 2025 Virginia General Assembly and that one of the items flagged for local review is a new restaurant styrofoam ban that allows for a financial-hardship exemption.
"We have a packet, that Jim Cornwell has provided us regarding legislative updates from the 2025 general assembly," Miss Hall said. She told commissioners staff will review the material to determine what local code updates are needed. She said the recent law includes a provision for a financial-hardship exemption and that Henrico County's one-page exemption form is one example staff will examine.
No formal local ordinance or exemption template was proposed or adopted at the July meeting; staff said they will bring examples and proposed language for the commission to consider in a future meeting.
