Steele County awards multiple road and paving contracts, orders aluminized culverts

Steele County commissioners voted June 3 to accept bids and move forward on several road projects, including gravel and paving contracts and a repair contract for the north end of County Road 8.
The board accepted a Lakeside Construction bid for a set of gravel/road segments and a KRB bid for another road segment; a provision in the Lakeside bid reduces the price if work is completed by Aug. 1, the transcript shows. Commissioners also accepted a paving/repair quote from RJ Zavril to address pavement failures near the county line on County Road 8. Commissioner motions to award those bids were seconded and approved by voice vote.
County staff reported that crack-seal crews had completed a little more than 6 miles on County Road 11 and were moving onto other routes; officials said crack sealing is using less product than prior larger projects but is taking time because of weather interruptions.
On two bridge locations — County Road 6 near Hope and County Road 20 to the north — staff shared culvert quotes and recommended using aluminized Type 2 culverts for both sites to extend service life in wet or corrosive soils. Commissioners agreed and directed procurement of the Type 2 culverts. The board also discussed ordering culverts from county bid prices and letting contractors quote apples-to-apples quantities.
The board asked staff to continue scheduling work, coordinate storage or disposal of millings with contracted vendors, and track timing so contractors can place these projects on their schedules.
The contracts and the culvert-specification decision were taken as formal actions; commissioners did not amend the bids during the meeting.
Next steps include staff ordering the specified culverts, notifying awarded contractors so they can schedule work, and returning cost or timing updates in subsequent meetings.
