Police commission advances two part-time candidates; code enforcement reports improvement at problem property

The Police Commission on July 14 reported that eight applicants were interviewed for a part-time police officer position; three were chosen to advance, one conditional offer was later revoked after a cursory background check and two candidates remain undergoing background investigations. Trustee Terry (public safety committee) said the commission's work is ongoing and that the department is pursuing thorough background checks before making final offers. "Of them, 3 were chosen to move forward. Of the 3, 1 had their conditional offer and find revoked due to a cursory background check, and we're doing the other 2 backgrounds right now," a trustee reported. Separately, the board discussed a code-enforcement complaint about a particular home. Neighbors submitted letters and multiple complaints prompted enforcement action; trustees said the property owner made a "substantial effort" to address the issues, removing structures, cutting weeds and placing a dumpster. Board members said they would continue monitoring to confirm compliance over time. No formal hires or enforcement penalties were announced at the July 14 meeting.
