Authority hears update on cathodic protection work at Fall River piles; diving, anode work expected next week

Kavanaugh, the contractor working on cathodic protection at Fall River piles, is advancing work but has faced coating, concrete-overspill and tidal challenges, the authority heard June 25.
Chair John Erickson and staff said the contractor had received the anodes and completed knuckle welds ‘‘just underneath the concrete at the top of the piles.’’ Sarah Page, executive director, noted crews had to clear concrete overspill from gaps and fill wider gaps prior to welding. She said heat had delayed coating application: “when they're opening up the Denso 5 25 that goes over those knuckle welds, the coating is literally hardening up in, like, minutes,” and crews plan to return to coating work when temperatures moderate.
Page said diving work and anode installation were expected to begin the following week and that crews had been adapting to tidal windows. She also described use of a device to stabilize the work platform while crews work from a skiff. Board members were not presented with a motion; the update was informational.
Next steps: staff will monitor Kavanaugh's progress and report back when the diving/anode phase is underway and when full coating can be completed.
