Board approves closing remaining portion of Cane Creek Road

The Meriwether County Board of Commissioners voted on June 24 to close the remaining portion of Cane Creek Road from Highway 85 to Old Woodbury Highway following a public hearing in which residents and the property owner’s representative supported the closure.

Staff and speakers told the board the wooden bridge on the previously closed segment had been condemned and the remaining portion of the road had been functionally inaccessible and unmaintained for roughly 20 years. Roger Lumsden (represented at the meeting) requested the closure; planning staff and the planning commission recommended closure at no cost to the county, and noted that if the road were reopened in the future the Cane Creek name would be preserved.

A resident testified the road had been non-maintained for a number of years and that formal abandonment was a formality to reflect the on-the-ground condition. After public hearing and brief discussion the board moved, seconded and passed a motion to close the specified segment; the board recorded the action by voice vote.

The closure was approved with direction that the county would not assume maintenance obligations for the closed segment going forward.
