The Madison Metropolitan School District Board of Education on June 23 approved a strategic framework in principle, adopting a vision, mission and five guiding commitments that district leaders said were developed through extensive community engagement.
The approved vision reads that MMSD will be “a learning community where all students are valued, challenged, supported, and inspired to reach for their dreams.” The proposed mission states that MMSD “creates safe and inclusive schools, delivers high-quality instruction, strengthens positive relationships, and partners with families and the community to achieve student self-determination and educational excellence.”
The framework includes five guiding commitments: lead with equity, foster belonging, deliver meaningful learning, improve with purpose, and embrace collective impact. RTI International (the district’s consultant for the project) and district staff described the process as iterative and community-led, with a cross-functional steering committee of more than 80 community members, students and staff advising drafts.
Board members praised the inclusive process and said the next steps will be development of measurable performance objectives, specific strategies and implementation and monitoring plans that will be brought back to the board. The superintendent said the plan is intended to be a “North Star” to guide resource allocation and decision-making.
The board approved the vision, mission and guiding commitments unanimously and asked staff to continue community engagement as the district drafts measurable objectives and action plans for the coming school year.
