Supervisors commit $75,000 local match for Safe Streets for All implementation grant

Pittsylvania County supervisors unanimously committed $75,000 on June 17 to serve as the 20% local match for a Danville Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) implementation grant under the federal Safe Streets for All program.
County staff said the match would support implementation of projects identified in the Safe Streets for All action plan the board adopted last month. Staff and the West Piedmont Planning District Commission (WPPDC), which houses the Danville MPO, are to work together to identify and prioritize candidate projects on county corridors identified as priorities in the plan: U.S. 29, Franklin Turnpike and Kentuck Road.
The board’s motion authorized staff to work with WPPDC, the Danville MPO and consultants to prepare the grant application and, if time allows during the application process, present a short list of specific projects for final board selection. The motion drew no public opposition during the meeting.
If the grant application is successful, the county’s $75,000 would be combined with federal funds to carry out corrective measures and safety improvements on the prioritized corridors. Staff estimated the $75,000 would come from the county’s grant local match/contingency line item in the FY2026 budget.
The board voted unanimously to approve the commitment and authorized staff to continue coordination with MPO partners on project selection and application preparation.
