Rachel Stanton (Disability Employment Subcommittee) and co-chairs described an April meeting where Treasury representatives discussed veterans with disabilities, and a presentation from ComCORE about employment programming for young adults with disabilities. The subcommittee and the Workforce Supports group are co-hosting a networking and resource event to connect youth with potential employers and job supports on June 23 at the State House; the event will also be virtual.
“We have the event coming up on June 23 at the State House. It's also virtual,” Rachel Stanton said, describing participating organizations including the Institute for Community Inclusion and the Developmental Disabilities Council.
Workforce Supports co-chair Andrew LaVault summarized meetings that covered immigration-related workforce issues and presentations from the Office of the Attorney General’s Fair Labor Division and Health Care Division; the groups posted meeting resources on the commission’s website. LaVault said the subcommittee will host an August 28 meeting featuring the Executive Office of Health and Human Services’ senior director for health-care workforce policy.
Commissioners also highlighted the Paul Spooner Generational Leadership Summit, an independent leadership development program that has trained emerging leaders with disabilities; commissioners suggested mapping alumni and summit participants into commission outreach and advisory efforts. Craig Hall and Charlie Carr encouraged commissioners to share funding leads to sustain the summit’s work.
Why it matters: Employment access, pre-employment supports and leadership development were identified as priorities; commissioners said sustaining youth employment programs and leadership pipelines is necessary to strengthen the disability workforce and future advocates.
