Board recognizes 13 administrator appointments; longtime BASA leader to retire

The Brevard Public Schools board recognized and welcomed 13 administrators appointed to new roles and heard a departing leaders’ reflection on administrative workload, recruitment and morale.
Superintendent Mark (Doctor) Rendell announced the appointments and invited each appointee to address the board. New and transferred administrators include Shannon Sajak, appointed principal at Stone Magnet Middle School; Christie Brusia, assistant principal at Anderson Elementary; Rebecca Bach, assistant principal at Jupiter Elementary; and others who spoke briefly and thanked family, mentors and colleagues for support.
After the appointments, Gary Shifrin, outgoing executive director of the Brevard Association of School Administrators (BASA), addressed the board and the public. Shifrin reviewed a 54‑year career in the district and in BASA and said he was retiring from the executive-director role. He praised current school leadership but cautioned that increasing responsibilities, political scrutiny and new laws are contributing to stress and attrition among educators.
"There has to come to a point that we must ask ourselves, how much more can we ask of our administrators, as well as our teachers," Shifrin said, adding that excessive duties and legal risks are pushing educators from the profession. He urged the board to continue giving BASA a voice in district decisions and highlighted BASA’s incoming executive director, Eileen Hare, and BASA president Krista Miller.
Board members and district leaders presented a plaque recognizing Shifrin’s service and congratulated the newly appointed administrators. The meeting recessed briefly afterward for photographs; no separate personnel roll-call votes were recorded on the public transcript during the presentation segment.
