Sumner County’s budget committee approved a continuing appropriation resolution June 9 to allow county departments to carry forward unfinished projects and contracts into July, and the committee added several late requests including seizure funds for a task‑force vehicle and funds to continue a sheriff’s camera refit.
Finance staff told the committee that the continuing appropriation preserves vendor contracts and purchase orders that would otherwise stop on July 1 and listed projects that county departments asked to carry forward: the Transfer Station (resource authority), Franklin Street parking/garage work, courtroom build‑out (architecture funding), ADA grants, Brown House projects, waterline and drainage work, and health‑department projects.
Members added two requests that arrived after the packet was prepared: about $61,000 in U.S. Treasury “justice” seizure funds for the drug task force to purchase and outfit a vehicle, and $209,743.76 in unencumbered local capital funds the sheriff’s office requested to continue an ongoing camera project for animal control and jail facilities. The highway department also asked to use roughly $11,000 from restricted funds to replace broken radios; committee members agreed to include that request so the department could proceed in July rather than wait for full commission action.
Committee members discussed limits on continuing appropriations: purchases already PO’d as of June 30 will continue; projects without POs will stop unless explicitly approved. One member recommended adding language that continued appropriations are “pending passage by commission” and the committee included that condition in its motion. The committee approved the resolution by voice vote and directed staff to forward the item to the full county commission for final approval.
Officials noted that if POs or contracts are not completed by June 30 the associated work will pause; several project managers were asked to expedite contracting where possible. The committee also reviewed routine inter‑budget transfers and payroll cleanup items during the meeting.
