Chilton County Court services seeks resolution to operate community corrections program in county

A representative of Chilton County Court System Services asked the Commission to adopt a resolution permitting the agency to operate a community corrections program in the county that supervises nonviolent felony offenders under court orders.

Cheryl Maddox, identifying herself with Chilton County Court System Services, told the Commission the program supervises 56 people and operates under the state Community Punishment and Corrections Act. She said the program supervises individuals who are nonviolent and not charged with offenses such as murder or serious child crimes; supervision may include reporting requirements and, where necessary, electronic monitoring. "We have at this time 56 that we're supervising," Maddox said. "We are strictly operating under the Community Punishment and Corrections Act. It requires a lot of things of us, and they're listed under number 7 a through f."

Maddox said the program is no cost to the county because the state provides funding, and that participants pay for their own monthly drug screens. "This is a no cost to the county. No cost to the county contract with you," she said. She added the program receives state compensation for supervision work and noted the program must pay for annual audits and other compliance tasks.

Maddox asked the Commission to pass a resolution that, among other items, would allow the county administrator to execute fiscal‑year 2025 grant documents electronically to ensure timely receipt from federal agencies (this administrative execution request was discussed separately during the meeting). Commissioners did not vote during the work session; Maddox said staff would seek the Commission's permission for the administrator to execute grant documents during the formal meeting process.

No formal action was taken at the work session. Commissioners invited questions; none were raised in the work session and Maddox said she would be available to answer them.
