During the proclamation ceremony, Dina Levins described losing her brother, Colton, in a March 18, 2024 collision in which a turning vehicle struck and killed the 23‑year‑old. Levins recounted the scene and urged motorists to “look twice before turning left,” citing a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration risk pattern and local vulnerability for motorcycles on scenic Hill Country roads.
Levins cited Texas Department of Transportation figures in her remarks: she said Texas saw 9,016 motorcycle crashes in 2024, with 585 motorcyclist deaths and more than 2,500 seriously injured.
The mayor read the proclamation recognizing motorcyclists as relatively unprotected road users and encouraged drivers and riders alike to obey traffic laws and increase awareness. Several riders and veterans’ motorcycle groups spoke in support, offering safety guidance that stressed defensive riding, helmet use and extra caution for left‑turning vehicles.
