Michelle Yancey, DPS administrator, said the program’s total pot has been discussed at $50,000,000; for a specific project referenced in the meeting staff noted an available amount of $14,000,000. Commissioners and staff also discussed the program’s tiered approach: the first round asked for 1:1 matches up to $1,000,000 (county + township), and the county will evaluate applications to determine how much of the fund is allocated in that round.
Sammy (county director of engineering/highway engineer) and DPS staff said they met with eligible townships, explained program guidelines and collected applications; the application deadline has passed and staff are now reviewing submissions to determine project validity and to plan allocations. Staff emphasized the program is not a replacement for the county’s ongoing roadwork; it is an additional pot of funds for communities that can meet the matching requirement.
Commissioners asked how the program would work for townships with limited budgets. DPS representatives said this particular matching program is geared to municipalities that can provide the required match; staff indicated there may be further rounds or tiers for smaller matches after the county evaluates the first‑round submissions and determines remaining funds. County staff said they would return with detailed allocation information once initial application reviews are complete.
At the business vote later in the meeting the commission approved budget adjustment number 202535118 certifying revenue in the County Road Fund. Commissioner Clemente made the motion; Commissioner Badu supported it; the chair voted yes and the motion carried.
Commissioners and staff said they expect to circulate allocation results after staff finish evaluating applications and to consider additional rounds or budgeting steps based on how much of the initial fund is committed.
