The Marshfield Plan Commission voted May 20 to approve a municipal code text amendment to Section 18-158 that would require Class 2 public-notice publication for conditional use permit hearings, aligning local code with a 2017 change in state law.
Planner Bryce Henberg said the change “should have happened about 8 years ago” and that staff has been publishing as Class 2 notices in practice even though the city code had not yet been updated. Henberg described a Class 2 notice as a newspaper notice published twice, typically 10 and 17 days before the hearing.
When asked whether the city also posts the notices online or on social media, Henberg said, “In terms of the requirement in the code, it would just be the newspaper. That’s what the statutory requirement is.” Steve (city staff) confirmed the paper used for official notices is the Marshfield News‑Herald, saying, “The Marshfield News‑Herald. That’s our official city newspaper.”
The commission’s motion to approve the text amendment passed on a roll-call vote. The item will proceed to the Common Council for final action; staff noted the change codifies an existing practice rather than creating a new posting process.
