Committee presses staff on enforcement, missing violations spreadsheet and increasing unauthorized signs

HTC Sign Advisory Committee members pressed staff for improved enforcement tracking at the May 20, 2025 meeting, saying violations are appearing quickly across the island and requesting a regular spreadsheet showing enforcement status.
Paul Wolf said the committee had asked repeatedly for the worksheet and had not received it. Committee members reported sending photographs of noncompliant signs to staff, and one participant said about 10 locations had been forwarded for attention. Members raised specific concerns about an Old South Wharf cottage stoop that has grown multiple small plaques for different businesses; staff member Holly Backus said she would contact a Neighborhood and Infrastructure representative she works with and follow up with Nikki.
Kevin Koester suggested contacting the new police chief to ask whether officers can address sidewalk (sandwich-board) signs, noting sidewalk enforcement is technically within police jurisdiction. Staff agreed to raise enforcement concerns with Nikki and to try to obtain the requested violations spreadsheet so committee members can monitor progress.
Committee members also noted that an application for Jack and Charlie's went to the full board and was returned at the applicant's request for further revisions; the matter may return to the committee for additional work.
