Codington County outlines courthouse generator hookup, short-term power shutdowns

Codington County facility staff told commissioners May 20 that work to connect a new backup generator at the courthouse will require scheduled outages and staged construction over the next few weeks.
The schedule matters because the courthouse and some county systems will be taken offline during the work, requiring coordination to avoid service disruptions.
Steve, the county facility manager, outlined a multi-stage plan for the project, including staging the power down, shutting off courthouse power for connections, gas-line piping work, concrete pours to set the transfer switch, and a generator startup and load-bank test. He said the contractor is “shooting for after 5 p.m.” for the generator startup to run tests after courthouse hours.
Steve provided a timeline for the remaining work and finishing touches: staging and power shutdowns in late May, concrete pours and curing, setting the transfer switch on new concrete, a preliminary generator startup and load-bank test in early June and landscaping and cleanup through mid-June.
Steve also reported that Watertown utilities progressed on a separate contractor boring operation related to gas-line work near the site and that landscaping and cleanup are scheduled through June 12.
No vote was required. Staff said they will narrow the exact times for the generator startup and inform commissioners and affected departments before outages.
