Walker County approves resolution to continue application process for state grant; detailed application due in June

Walker County commissioners on May 19 approved Resolution 2025-67, a formal step enabling county staff to proceed with a detailed application for a state-funded grant program after the county cleared an initial application screening.

County staff told the court that the program drew more than 300 applicants and that Walker County ‘‘made the cut,’’ allowing staff to submit a full application by an upcoming deadline in late June. The county plans to collaborate with the city on design elements, including work on University Avenue and courthouse-adjacent areas, and staff asked local entities for letters of support and additional resolutions the application can include.

A presenter said the grant is state-funded and would not require a new county tax; the county’s design contractor and city partners will share some design costs to produce a stronger application. The court voted to approve the agenda item and authorize staff to move forward with preparing the detailed application.

Discussion vs. decision: the court’s action was to approve the supporting resolution and permit staff to continue the application process; no grant award was made at this meeting. Staff said the detailed application is due around June 20–21 and that additional materials will be attached to support the county’s submission.

Next steps: county staff will solicit letters of support from participating entities, finalize design materials with the city, and submit the detailed application by the stated deadline.
