Mister King, a staff member, said the county received a letter from the Department of Historic Resources noting that the Cuckoo School, on Jefferson Highway, is a rare surviving two‑room African‑American schoolhouse built in 1925 that served grades 1 through 7 until it closed in 1955. King said the nomination described the building’s role in rural Black education during segregation.
A supervisor moved and a second was recorded; the board voted by voice and the chair declared the motion passed. One supervisor urged the board to approve the resolution so local supporters can begin fundraising to stabilize and restore the school building. The board asked staff to follow up on ownership details; King said he would provide the ownership information to the supervisors.
No specific county funding, parcels, or grant commitments were made at the meeting. The resolution is a formal expression of support for listing on the state registry and may assist local or private fundraising and preservation efforts but does not itself transfer ownership or allocate county funds.
