Board approves SCOPE fee increases to keep program solvent

The Springfield SD 186 Board of Education voted Monday to increase fees for Project Extended Care (SCOPE), saying program revenues had not kept pace with rising operating costs and that fee increases were necessary to make the program financially sustainable.
The resolution states the purpose of the increase: SCOPE must “make ends meet” so salary and other operating costs do not draw from the district’s education fund. Board discussion noted the program is intended to break even, not generate profit.
Board members moved and seconded the resolution and approved it by roll call. President Erica Austin and all voting members recorded “aye”; board members said the district will communicate the fee changes quickly to families because registration for the 2025–26 year begins soon.
Administrators said a variety of fee proposals were considered by the scope committee and that the committee adjusted proposals to avoid either a shortfall or an outsized surplus. One board member said the committee reviewed nine fee proposals and tried to balance affordability for families with the program’s need to cover salaries and other costs.
The administration said the new fees will take effect at the start of the 2025–26 school year and that the district will notify families about the changes immediately so parents can register.
