“Hendersonville has the most extensive work because Hendersonville is landlocked,” Dr. Langford said, explaining the district is building two support buildings behind the stadium — a weight room and a training room — so other playing surfaces can be converted for additional sports. He said the district added a baseball building after a tornado damaged trees on the site, creating a construction window the district used to expand facilities.
Dr. Langford described Portland’s visitor stands as nearly complete, and said Beach and Hendersonville will likely finish later in the summer when cranes and aluminum bleachers are installed. He said Station Camp required more intensive repairs, noting prior drainage problems that had eroded part of the track; the district plans to correct crowning and drainage before re-sodding the field. Merrill High’s tennis courts require review and planning through the city of Hendersonville, Dr. Langford said.
North Sumner recently received a new exterior glass panel in advance of end-of-school activities; staff and community members gave positive feedback, Dr. Langford said, and teachers appreciated increased natural light compared with prior fiberglass panels.
Dr. Langford also warned that recent heavy rain has delayed some work. “The only big hole that we’re having right now is rain,” he said. Committee members requested drone footage and facility status reports; Dr. Langford said he had emailed a link with footage and summaries showing completed work at each site.
The committee did not take formal action on the facility updates; the briefing provided status and scheduling information and identified outstanding approvals (for example, municipal planning review for Merrill High tennis courts) and remaining construction sequencing to be completed before fall athletics seasons.
