Board members raised concerns after learning that the Mid-Michigan Transportation Authority (MTA) planned to remove a downtown bus stop and replace it with a bench. Members said the DDA was not consulted and that authority over the right-of-way and bus-stop locations rests with the city Department of Public Works and the MTA.
At the meeting a board member said their last information was that MTA intended to remove the stop and put a bench in its place. Other members criticized MTA’s presentation to the board as “ill informed” and said MTA representatives seemed unprepared when they earlier discussed the issue. The board also noted graffiti on the existing shelter and suggested simple repairs — such as replacing plexiglass — could improve the stop in the short term.
DDA members were told they do not control right-of-way decisions and that the DPW must coordinate with MTA on bus-stop locations and shelter maintenance. The DDA asked staff to check with DPW about any current plans or formal complaints that prompted the MTA’s proposal and to seek the number and source of complaints if that data exists.
No formal action was taken; members agreed to request updates from staff. DPW and MTA involvement were described as necessary steps before any change could proceed.
