Board to decide whether to extend Archway workforce program after committee recommends three‑year option

Burke County’s finance committee discussed whether to continue participation in the Archway program, a University of Georgia‑affiliated community partnership that connects universities, local governments and schools on workforce and community projects.

Archway committee members told the finance committee the partnership initially asked partners for a six‑year commitment but would accept a three‑year local commitment if all partners agree. The school board has committed to three years. Committee members said Archway has provided project assistance — for example, design help and organized job fairs — but several members said the program must show clearer, locally driven workforce outcomes if the county is to continue funding it.

The committee placed the question on the Tuesday board agenda for a final decision. One commissioner said, “If we go for 3 years and they don't produce, then we're done,” and several members recommended stronger local implementation, more youth and employer engagement, and measurable targets if the county continues participation.
