Lake County launches framework for attainable housing task force, kickoff planned this summer

Lake County staff told the Planning, Building, Zoning and Environment Committee on April 30 that the county and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) are beginning a countywide Attainable Housing Task Force, funded by a $300,000 Schreiber Foundation grant, to develop strategies for increasing housing affordability and diversity.
Eric Wagner said the grant will fund a “big‑tent” effort that includes municipalities, nonprofits, faith communities and other stakeholders. CMAP and county staff are meeting weekly to establish project milestones. The county plans outreach and a public kickoff this summer, followed by a series of technical task‑force meetings and a final summit tentatively set for February 2026.
Wagner described a multi‑step process: identifying stakeholders, convening a kickoff event, developing a baseline assessment of affordability and housing stock, defining a vision for growth, identifying obstacles and strategies, and recommending municipal‑ and county‑level policy approaches. Staff said board members will be invited to serve as ambassadors to promote the task force to their municipal leaders and mayors.
The county expects the initiative to run through winter 2026 and said it will provide periodic updates to the board. Staff emphasized the effort is intended to produce implementable recommendations for municipalities and the county to expand attainable housing supply and types across Lake County.
