At the meeting, parks staff member Mr. Drake said, "Just a couple of things. First, I wanna thank our staff. Last few weeks have been extremely trying with the, weather, the rain events that we've had." He described a storm that "moved through, kind of the center of town last week and took some trees down right at the end of the work day, and everybody just rallied together." Drake said crews worked into the evening to clear streets and get facilities open and that the department had been able to get many fields ready even after heavy rain, though "with the exception of tonight, we did rain everything out and even closed soccer fields." The transcript indicates staff worked around power-line hazards and waited for AES to de-energize lines before cutting trees near the levee.
The board also heard about a separate tree emergency on the golf course. Park Commissioner Mr. Buer thanked crews for a quick response to an April 22 incident at the 15th hole, saying it involved a large, partially hollow tree with two leaders that had been knocked over by wind and that crews minimized damage to the course.
Drake and other speakers described routine maintenance impacts from the weather: staff said they often need to mow five days per week to keep up and that recent rain has taken "more than half day to" several workdays, though crews headed back out as soon as conditions allowed. The transcript records that some games were moved from Greenville to Troy on short notice when fields elsewhere were wetter, showing how field availability has driven operations.
