Washington County proclaims May 5–9 as Jury Appreciation Week

The Washington County Commissioners Court on May 6 adopted a proclamation declaring May 5–9, 2025, Jury Appreciation Week, recognizing jurors’ role in the administration of justice.

The proclamation notes that the right to a trial by jury is a foundation of democracy and cites the U.S. Constitution; it thanks citizens who serve despite personal sacrifices. The court unanimously approved the proclamation after a short presentation and public remarks.

A court representative who addressed the commissioners said the office mailed 3,755 jury summons over the past year and that four jury trials were held. She thanked jurors, district clerk office staff and bailiffs for their work and invited present jurors and staff to a photo. Former juror John Wright described his experience on a “very difficult” case and said serving alongside other jurors who resolved differences to reach a decision was meaningful: “We wanna do the right thing,” Wright said.

The court moved and seconded the proclamation and voted in favor; the presiding officer announced the motion carried.

The court’s action is ceremonial and does not change county operations; the proclamation encourages residents to recognize the contribution of jurors to the local justice system.
