Molalla River SD 35 athletic update: participation rises, unified program expands

Athletic staff provided the board an update on winter sports participation and results, highlighting growth in several programs and plans for a future turf-and-track capital project.
Mike Lord, who delivered the recap, said the district’s athletics mission centers on "connections through extracurricular activities" and a theme of "character, academic and athletic excellence." He reported participation and competitive results across multiple sports: girls basketball had 20 participants on two teams and finished third in the Tri Valley Conference; boys basketball fielded three teams with about 40 participants and finished fourth in league play; wrestling had 45 participants (about 40 boys and five girls) and produced three state placers, with the boys finishing 10th at the 4A level; cheer finished third in state with 16 athletes; swim programs combined had about 35 participants with one relay qualifying for the state meet; and the unified basketball program reported 13 athletes and four partners.
Lord highlighted the role of coaches, the band and cheer in supporting competitions and noted that unified teams played home games earlier in the evening to increase attendance. He also said the athletic department is working with district staff and community donors on a turf-and-track capital project and that community fundraising events are planned, including a booster auction and a May community kickoff at the football field.
No formal board action was taken on the athletics report; it was presented for information and discussion.
