SAISD outlines expanded summer programs, YMCA partnership and feeding plan

San Angelo Independent School District presented a detailed plan for summer 2025 programming aimed at accelerating learning and supporting families, including academic interventions, transition “jump start” sessions, special education extended‑school‑year services and a YMCA partnership for childcare and feeding.

The district said elementary summer school will run June 4–26 at Glenmore and Goliad elementaries, targeting students entering second and fifth grade with instruction in reading and math, with a heavier emphasis on literacy in second grade. Administrators said those grade levels were chosen based on multiple data points and cohort progress measures. “Knowing the importance of strong early literacy skills…we need to provide further support for this current cohort of students entering second grade,” Doctor Gomez said.

Emergent bilingual students who meet state criteria will be offered a summer program for students entering kindergarten and first grade; that program will be at Goliad. A separate kindergarten “jump start” program will be offered at Bowie, Fannin, Glenmore and Goliad to help children and families with routine and transition tasks before the first day of school. Middle‑school jump start sessions — three sessions in early June (session 2 on June 9–10 and session 3 on June 11–12) — will let incoming middle‑school students tour campuses and practice routines in smaller groups. High school offerings include small‑group STEM (math and science) and humanities (English/social studies) instruction, two sessions of targeted End‑of‑Course remediation, and July credit‑recovery opportunities.

Special education extended‑school‑year (ESY) services will be individualized by ARD committees; secondary ESY will be at Lakeview and elementary ESY at Lamar. Because Lamar does not meet federal criteria to operate a free summer feeding site, the district will provide busing to Goliad for summer meals so families and students still receive free feeding services when eligible.

The district will partner with the YMCA in July to provide childcare for families and academic support on SAISD campuses; the YMCA will use district facilities at no cost during the partnership. District leaders said leadership positions were filled and teacher hires for summer programs began the week of late April, with staff notifications scheduled by May 2. Specific start and end times, transportation and registration forms will be provided to families in May.

Board members and parents praised the jump‑start sessions as reducing student and parent anxiety and asked for clear scheduling information; administrators said detailed schedules will be distributed in May.
