Dickenson County pursues generators for remote pump stations through CDBG urgent-need application

At the April 22 meeting of the Dickenson County Board of Supervisors, county staff said the county is applying for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) urgent-need funds to install generators at remote pump stations to reduce the risk of water outages during power failures after this winter's floods.
County staff member Parker told the board the application is being prepared with technical help from Cameron Plateau and that the focus is equipment for pump stations. "Some of the things, you know, we thought we'd be applied for, we learned we couldn't. But 1 thing that we were able to apply for ... is permanent mount generators at some of the pump stations on the PSA's water tanks," Parker said. Later in the same exchange Parker clarified that the project would target the most remote pump stations and described them as "non permanent mount generators at the pump stations in the most remote locations, to get to." Parker said he has been working with "Mister Baker at the PSA" on pricing.
The project is framed as an urgent-need application because of outages after the county's February flooding. Multiple residents who offered public comment supported generator purchases. One resident said, "I think it's a good thing," and others described previous multi-week water interruptions and how portable generators or permanent backup could reduce those outages.
The board closed the public hearing on the CDBG urgent-need application after public comment and later scheduled a follow-up public hearing for May 27 at 5:45 p.m. County staff said Cameron Plateau is preparing and submitting the application on the county's behalf and that the PSA (public service authority) is a project partner.
If funded, the application would pay for backup power equipment at pump locations the PSA and county staff identified as hardest to reach during outages. Parker thanked Cameron Plateau staff for assisting with the application.
The board took no final funding decision at the April meeting beyond closing the hearing and scheduling the follow-up; staff said they will return with more details in the next hearing cycle.
