Bedford County sheriff reports March activity, jail processing and inmate program updates

The county’s contribution to the 17th Judicial Drug Task Force included 22 investigations; the sheriff listed seizures that he summarized as 14 firearms, three vehicles and multiple controlled substances, naming "marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, hydrochloride" and noting "34 doses of controlled prescription medication, most of which is suspected to be, basically fentanyl." The sheriff also described court-security activity for March: court security screened and searched 5,678 people coming through the court complex, held 34 court sessions accounting for 1,708 individual court cases, served 15 criminal and civil warrants, took 34 people into custody and transported 48 inmates from courtroom holdings.
Jail administrator Ronald Prince presented financial figures and operational notes for the jail. Prince said the sheriff fees for the month totaled $2,767.64; commissary and other receipts were discussed (transcript lists multiple itemized amounts including a phones figure of $11,747.23 and additional receipts of $2,850 on six submitters). Prince characterized March as a very busy month and answered questions from committee members about the jail reports.
The sheriff mentioned a new inmate program: beekeeping instruction and upcoming installation of bees on Monday as part of an inmate responsibility and skills program. The sheriff and jail administrator said they expect the program to provide educational and responsibility-building opportunities for inmates.
