Sumner County veteran services seeks part-time officer as state readies new case-management software

Sumner County’s veteran services staff reported that the office assisted several widows and helped homeless veterans secure temporary lodging during the prior month, and the office asked commissioners for additional part-time staffing to reduce an operational backlog.

The presenter told the legislative committee the office helped three widows whose cases had been delayed and assisted other veterans with temporary housing and outreach. Staff reported a case-processing backlog of roughly one-and-a-half to two weeks and asked the commission to approve an additional part-time veteran service officer so the desk would be staffed consistently to answer phones and take walk-ins. The presenter argued walk-in service remains important because many veterans arrive after referrals from the clerk’s office or the VA clinic in Gallatin.

Staff also warned that the state is rolling out a new veterans management software statewide beginning in May; the presenter said report formats and the office’s ability to generate familiar reports will change and asked for patience during the transition.
