Council interviews three planning commission candidates; appointment deferred to full session

The Springfield City Council interviewed three candidates for one opening on the Planning Commission created by Commissioner Rhodes’ resignation effective March 10. The vacant seat’s term expires Dec. 31, 2026.

Sarah Weaver, planning commission assistant, opened the interviews and explained the vacancy and term. Candidates Jonathan Siegel, Gary Jones and Deanna Jacobson each described their qualifications and views on land‑use priorities: Siegel cited prior planning commission experience and interest in the city’s development goals, saying he wanted to “provide input to the city council” rather than serve as the primary decision maker. Gary Jones highlighted his 42 years as an attorney with experience in real‑estate and environmental matters and said he could help screen projects and identify gaps in infrastructure funding. Deanna Jacobson emphasized local knowledge from living inside the urban growth boundary and concerns about sidewalks, traffic and school capacity.

Councilors discussed their preferences privately and several councilors announced ranked choices in the work session: some named Jonathan as their first choice, others named Deanna or Gary. Because one councilor (referred to as Victoria) was absent, councilors opted to defer a final appointment and directed that the interviews be forwarded to the full session for decision once the absent councilor has reviewed recordings.

Ending: The seat will be filled at a future council meeting; staff said the vacancy will be open on March 10 and the term would run through Dec. 31, 2026.
