Kane County committee hears KingCom hiring update, backs proclamation for Telecommunicators Week

KingCom representative Miss Guthrie said the agency is focusing on recruitment and public outreach, including job fairs; she reported one new trainee was hired March 3 and that telecommunicator staffing remains the organization’s primary need. She told the committee that a follow-up presentation next month will include the annual report and more detail on KingCom’s finances.
Guthrie summarized recent budget work with county finance staff, saying the office discovered “we were missing a couple months of revenue” and that although expenses previously appeared high, “our revenue was at about 111%.” She described ongoing recruitment efforts and public education events intended to bring new trainees into KingCom.
Guthrie also briefed members on federal legislation: she said Representatives Norma Torres and Brian Fitzpatrick reintroduced the 9-1-1 Saves Act on Jan. 16 to formally reclassify 9-1-1 telecommunicators as first responders instead of office/administrative support. Guthrie called the measure a recognition effort and said it carries no fiscal cost to taxpayers. Committee member Gumbs reported she discussed the bill with Representative Torres while in Washington and said the measure is on a priority list and being advanced by the association she referenced.
During discussion the committee moved to consider and adopt a resolution recognizing telecommunicators. Committee member Gumbs moved the resolution and Mister Tepe seconded. The committee conducted a roll-call vote with the following recorded: Gumbs — yes; Pepe — yes; Williams — yes; Leonard — yes; Molina — yes. The motion passed.
The committee placed routine monthly financial and operational reports on file by unanimous consent later in the meeting.
The committee did not take other formal action on federal legislation; Guthrie asked only that members be informed about the 9-1-1 Saves Act and thanked member Gumbs for advocacy work.
