Defender General asks appropriations panel to preserve contracts, restore training funds as caseloads rise
Defender General Matt Valerio told the Senate Appropriations Committee that rising caseloads and a statewide backlog are straining the public defense system and asked lawmakers to restore a 4% pay request for assigned-counsel contractors, fund $60,000 for training and cover one-time office and server costs.
