County engineering staff updated the Board on the 5.6‑mile Kellner Ditch cleaning and repair project and described a change that will keep construction out of several private backyards after revisiting proposed access routes.
Don Romanczyk, county staff on the project, told commissioners the team re‑examined access and engaged the wetland consultant and contractor to determine whether work could occur from the opposite side of the ditch. Staff said the contractor identified a feasible, temporary crossing solution that avoids placing material inside the ditch and avoids impacting the jurisdictional waterway's high‑water mark. The alternate access increases cost by a "little bit more than $40,000," which staff said is within contract contingency and the project's overall estimate of about $1,500,000.
Romanczyk said the change allowed the county to minimize disruption to residents and a nearby farmer while keeping the work moving forward; staff instructed the contractor to proceed with the adjusted access plan. The board received the update and commissioners expressed appreciation for efforts to avoid property impacts. Staff noted there may be other minor change orders and credits as the project continues.
